COMMUNITY EDUCATION

TCC hosted its fifth annual community education program on Poverty and the Brain: The Impact of Deprived Environments and What We Can Do About It. Frank Kros, MSW, JD from the Institute of Transformative Education, spoke to 84 parents and professionals from all over the Eastern Shore. The objective of the workshop was to learn about new developments in neuroscience and strategies for combating the negative impact of poverty on children’s ability to learn.
FUNDS RAISED

Talbot Community Connections (TCC), a small group of volunteers, was formed to raise funds to enhance the Talbot County Department of Social Services’ (TCDSS) capacity to respond directly to problems of safety and well-being of county citizens. The funds distributed in 2006 provided help to abused children, families in crisis, the unemployed, and disabled and frail elderly. TCC grants provided monies for emergency shelter, rent and utilities, groceries, medical visits, medication, overnight respite care, birth certificates, baby items, bedroom items, bus tickets, books and school supplies. TCC funds helped roughly 157 children, families and adults experience a safer and more secure environment.

TCC raised $ 27,000 in 2007 through two fundraisers and special gifts. One special $10,000 gift from the Merriewold Trust was designated to establish an endowment with the Mid-Shore Community Foundation. TCC administrative expenses were below 10 percent.
